What You Should Know Before Getting Eyelash Extensions

As we head towards the holiday season and the warmer months of the year which are filled with concerts, festivals, gatherings and other major events, more and more people of all ages are considering getting eyelash extensions for the first time. It’s easy to understand why – eyelash extensions can really accentuate your eyes and enhance your look! If you’re considering getting lash extensions, here’s a few answers to some questions that we commonly get asked:

What are eyelash extensions and how are they applied?

Eyelash extensions are silk, mink or synthetic lashes that are carefully applied on top of your natural lashes, near (but not touching) the lash line with a semi-permanent bonding adhesive.

At Rachel Lavelle Beauty Salon in Fremantle, our eyelash extensions are safely and gently applied by professional and knowledgeable lash technicians. We offer classic eyelash extensions that are perfect for a more natural look, volume eyelash extensions that are bold and dramatic and hybrid eyelash extensions that are a combination of the two.

Do eyelash extensions ruin your natural lashes?

Eyelash extensions will not ruin your natural lashes if they have been applied using the correct techniques and with a safe lash adhesive.

How long do eyelash extensions last?

How long your eyelash extensions will last can depend on a range of factors, including your eyelash growth cycle and how you care for your lash extensions once applied.

There are three phases to the eyelash growth cycle, these are the anagen (growth phase), catagen (transition phase) and telogen (resting phase) phases.

While how long each phase lasts can vary from person to person, typically the anagen phase lasts from 4-6 weeks, the catagen phase lasts approximately 2-3 weeks and the telogen phase can last up to 3 months.

So, what does this mean for lash extensions? Well, lash extensions are applied to natural eyelashes when they are in the catagen stage of the life cycle. They cannot be applied during the anagen phase as they are too delicate to hold an eyelash extension. This means that you can expect your eyelash extensions to last around 2-3 weeks.

How do I care for my eyelash extensions?

Now onto eyelash extension aftercare. We recommend that you avoid touching your eyelash extensions during the first few hours after application. The more that you touch them, the more likely that the oils from your fingers will loosen your eyelashes and cause them to fall off prematurely.

For similar reasons we also recommend avoiding hot showers, swimming pools, steamy saunas and spas for the first 48 hours. Once the adhesive has properly set, your eyelash extensions are technically waterproof but the more you avoid water the longer they will last.

You can clean your eyelashes a few times each week with a very small amount of a foaming lash shampoo. Try to be as gentle as possible and rinse with lukewarm water and then pat (not rub) them dry.

Can I wear mascara or eyeliner with eyelash extensions?

You can but keeping it to a minimum is preferable. Avoid using waterproof or oil-based mascara or eyeliner and when you are ready to take your makeup off, we recommend using an oil-free makeup remover and not baby/makeup wipes or cotton pads.
